Ungrafted vines planted in sand
- Appellation
- Colares

- Ramisco, Malvasia de Colares
Colares vines grow directly in the coastal sand near Sintra, where phylloxera cannot survive, so they are among the few European vines not grafted onto American rootstock. Vineyards shrank from about 2,500 acres in the 1940s to around 50 acres. From 1934 to 1994 only the local cooperative could use the appellation.
